Adam Overett is a writer and performer living in New York City. He is currently a Jonathan Larson Fellow in Musical Theater at the Dramatists Guild (2010-2011).
As an actor, Adam has appeared on Broadway and on national tour in THE LIGHT IN THE PIAZZA, covering the role of Fabrizio. He recently played the role of Neil Kellerman in the national pre-Broadway tour of DIRTY DANCING, and half the cast in the two-person musical MURDER FOR TWO at the Adirondack Theatre Festival in NY and the Eureka Theatre in San Francisco. He originated the role of Herb in the off-Broadway musical JUNIE B. JONES (by Marcy Heisler & Zina Goldrich, based on the bestselling book series) at the Lucille Lortel Theatre, and has performed in numerous other productions throughout New York City and the country.
His musical CALL IT COURAGE (based on the Newbery Medal-winning book by Armstrong Sperry), for which he wrote book, music, lyrics, and orchestrations, received its premiere production at the Zachary Scott Theatre in Austin, TX in April of 2010, where it was nominated for five B. Iden Payne Awards, including Outstanding Original Script and Outstanding Production of Youth Theatre. The show was selected for the 2005 New York Musical Theatre Festival, and has been a finalist for the ASCAP Workshop, the Bloomington Playwriting Contest and other awards. It was given a staged reading at the York Theatre in 2004, and was featured on the &8220;Bound For Broadway&8221; concert series at Merkin Hall in 2005.
His song “My Sky,” performed by Stephanie J. Block, is featured on the CD No More Revivals, soon to be released by Sh-K-Boom Records; his song “The First Amendment” appears in WE THE PEOPLE, a musical about American government produced by Theatreworks USA, premiering in July 2010 at the Lucille Lortel Theatre; and his short musical “I Don’t Speak Italian” appeared in SNAPSHOTS, a collection of musical vignettes produced by Prospect Theater Company in February 2010 in New York City.
Adam is a member of the Lehman Engel Musical Theater Advanced Workshop at BMI, where he won the 2002 Jerry Harrington Award for Excellence, and has studied musical theater writing with Tony Award-winner Adam Guettel (THE LIGHT IN THE PIAZZA) and Andrew Lippa (THE ADDAMS FAMILY).
Adam has also authored the musicals THE FIREBIRD and MAKING THE CALL; the screenplay THE SWALLOW'S NEST; and several plays, including PASSPORT, STANDING GUARD, and THE BIRDBATH. Current projects include: EVERYBODY’S FAMOUS with director Alan Souza; HENRY & ANNE; a rock musical about Henry VIII of England and the divorce that changed the world; and MY LIFE IS A MUSICAL.
Adam is a graduate of Yale University, where he earned a B.A. in dramatic literature and music, and won the John Golden Prize for New Musicals.
